There are two distinct ways of getting a brand new cage for your chickens. The first and easier one is to get it from the market. A pet store or a shop which specializes in chicken cages will have one that will suit your needs. A very important point to keep in mind is the size of the cage. It should definitely be spacious enough to ensure accommodation and strong enough to ensure protection of all your chickens.

Readymade chicken cages are generally made of wood, plastic or metal and are strong and comfortable too. The only minus point in getting a readymade one is the price. It’s going to be an expensive affair which may not be too affordable.

The other option is a tad more difficult but satisfying and lighter on the pocket, which is to build a chicken cage on your own. It is not an earth shattering task, as lots of people do it.

Before you start collecting the material for building the chicken cage, decide how many chickens are going to stay in it, select the breed carefully as per the local climate of your area and finally check the local laws about chicken rearing.

Most of the chicken cages are made of wood or steel, straw for insulation and chicken wire. For doors and windows, one sometimes uses glass too. But before you start building one, draw your design using a pen and paper. It helps you have a clear idea of the chicken cage otherwise some unwanted and costly mistakes occur.

To ensure that your chickens get their supply of direct sunlight the whole year, select the location of the chicken cage correctly. It should not look ugly and out of place either. To help the chickens move in and out easily, doors should be comfortably placed. The windows should have proper insulation to protect from cold wind during winters. For summer months the ventilation has to be perfect. Chicken cages should be planned in such a way that regular cleaning, extracting eggs and other such daily chores do not become a headache. The cage should also keep all predators at bay.

As the chickens need their supply of water and feed comfortably close, ensure you place the containers carefully. The feed dishes should be placed at a height where the chickens do not have to stretch their neck to get the stuff to avoid spillage. In case of spillage, the drainage of the chicken cage should easily flow it away.
