Pet Chicken Coop

A pet chicken coop is basically a structure in which live chickens may be kept. It may be placed on a chicken farm or a chicken homestead. Many people even term it as a chicken shack or a chicken house. Whatever it may be called, the basic purpose of the pet chicken coop is to provide safety and security to the chickens which are kept at home. Different types of chicken coops are available in the market for different breeds of chickens. It is also quite easy to build a chicken coop at home. The pet chicken coop is small in size and may be built at home very cheaply as the raw materials are mostly found either at home itself or in the local hardware store. The special fencing that is used in the chicken coop is known as the chicken wire. Apart from this fencing, you need a little bit of wood and straw.

The most important concern while building your pet chicken coop is the issue of protection. It should be a place that protects the chicken from hazardous weather conditions such as wind, snow, heavy rain, cold climate, hale, etc. as well as from the hungry predators.

Ventilation is very important in a pet chicken coop so that there is draft-free air movement inside the coop. Proper coop ventilation helps to remove the excessive carbon dioxide and moisture and keep a steady supply of sufficient oxygen and fresh air. Also the coop walls should be properly insulated in order to keep the chickens dry and healthy. Moreover, the coop should never be exposed to prolonged dampness; otherwise it might get damaged soon and also might harm the chickens. So it is advisable to build the coop on a high and well-drained area. And the front side should always face the sun to get the maximum sunlight.

In order to protect the chickens from predators the coop should be confined with chicken wire or fence. The doors and windows should always be securely covered up. It is advisable to install proper screening systems for the doors and the windows.

The chicken feeding devices and the watering structures should be properly placed so that the chicken flock can access easily to them. The chicken feeders should be kept clean and filled with sufficient food items. Similarly the water containers should be conveniently placed and should contain clean water throughout the whole day.

These are some of the essential measures to be kept in mind while building a good pet chicken coop.
